The California Roots Music and Arts Festival Celebrates Earth Day with Green Initiatives

(MONTEREY, CA – April 2015, source: Press Junkie PR) The California Roots Music and Arts Festival is one of the fastest growing festivals of its size in United States and brings top tier reggae, positive hip hop and blues artists under the unifying term of “roots” music to Monterey, California each May. Cali Roots began as a grassroots event, with the organizers promoting local talent, communities and conscience living. Approaching the 6th year of the festival, the organizers are loyal to their locally focused ethos, seen through the support of California-based businesses and non-profits and expanding sustainable practices with each annual event.

With the large scale of the California Roots Festival, which sees ten thousand fans pass through the Monterey County Fairgrounds gates each day, “greening” the event is of elevated importance to the organizers and staff. Co-Producer Dan Sheehan explains, “Being an environmentally conscience event is a necessity for us and our community. With each event, we are striving to think of innovative ways for us to add to the environmental economy of Monterey and the surrounding areas.” He adds, “We want to blaze the path of producing an environmentally sound event, along with festivals like Bonnaroo and Wakarusa that are enacting similar measures.”

Green-centric programs this year include utilizing Klean Kanteens to eliminate single-use beverage containers and partnering with TripZero, a service that address and works to correct the carbon footprint created by travel to the festival. Cali Roots is committing to being a Zero Waste event this year, which includes diverting all food vendor and catering organics and recyclables from the landfill as well as composting in public concession areas. To help organize these green efforts and make sure they are implemented successfully into the festival experience, Cali Roots has partnered with The Offset Project [TOP], a local Monterey non-profit. TOP works with individuals, municipalities, businesses and special events to establish sound waste policies and implement best practices in environmental stewardship.

“Over the past few years, Cali Roots has become a leader in special event greening in Monterey County,” said Abbie Beane, director of sustainability programs for The Offset Project. “Each year the event takes its efforts to the next level, from increasing waste diversion and neighborhood cleanup to enforcing sustainable purchasing and investing in carbon offsetting.”

As a first step, TOP will work with vendors on purchasing only compostable and recyclable foodservice ware, and will educate vendors and catering on separating all compostable and recyclable materials in the back of the house.  All compostable foodservice ware is made entirely from plants and certified to turn into compost; it will be sourced from our partner, World Centric. In the public concession areas, spectators will see zero-waste stations, consisting of recycling, composting and trash options, and manned by volunteers who will educate festival-goers on proper separation. All materials will go through a final separation process before compostables are sent to the Monterey Regional Waste Management District (MRWMD). At the MRWMD facility, compostable materials enter an anaerobic digester, which captures methane emissions and converts the methane into usable electricity. After 21 days in the digester, the organics are further processed and sent as compost to local vineyards, golf courses or other sites.

Klean Kanteen will join forces with Cali Roots once again in an effort to eliminate waste at the festival. Attendees are encouraged to bring an empty water container to the festival and utilize one of the many purified water refill stations, provided by Klean Kanteen. The Klean Kanteen pint program is another opportunity for festival goers to not only continue Cali Roots mission in becoming a fully green festival, but to save money and return home with a unique souvenir.

In order to further conserve, carpooling is greatly encouraged. Also, Cali Roots encourages forms of transportation that do not require gasoline. Like years prior, there will be bicycle and skateboard valet check-in at the grounds.

Headlining 2015’s California Roots Music and Arts Festival will be SOJA, The Roots, Michael Franti and Spearhead, and Slightly Stoopid, amongst 34 others. The festival will also feature other notable artists from the reggae, hip-hop, and blues genres delivering a blend of good vibes and positive roots music. Among the lineup comprising 39 artists, the festival will include Jamaican reggae breakout Chronixx, Los Angeles hip hop group Dilated Peoples, reggae-rock band Dirty Heads, and multi-platinum hip hop group Cypress Hill.

About California Roots

For more than a decade, U.S. Reggae artists have been organically building a solid foundation from the Hawaiian Islands to the west and east coasts.  This new generation of Reggae artists continue to reach new heights of success through prolific music releases, relentless touring, collaboration, and social media savviness.  The California Roots Music and Arts Festival was the first major event to take these likeminded artists and showcase them in a festival setting. 2014’s headliners included Steel Pulse, Damian Marley, and Ziggy Marley, proving that the ‘California Roots’ state of mind stretches far past the state’s border.

We also set up our company and our manufacturing to be environmentally responsible and sustainable from the beginning. We oversee our manufacturing every step of the way, from the sourcing of the basic materials to the retail floor and we’re constantly working to cut waste and operate more efficiently.
