Grupo Fantasma Featured on the Wall Street Journal for New Single “Solo Un Sueño”

The Austin, Texas latin funk band has had a lot to celebrate. First, their new single “Solo Un Sueño” was just released from their upcoming fifth studio album Problemas. The single was premiered on The Wall Street Journal and contains their trademark Afro-Latin dance feel, but also tells a familiar story to many of us: achieving the American dream. Not so familiar is the immigrant’s perspective of making the difficult move to the United States.
“Grupo Fantasma has certainly worked hard: the nine-piece collective has released five of its own albums since forming in 2000, appeared on recordings by other acts and performed with artists including Prince, Maceo Parker, and Wu-Tang Clan member GZA,” says Wall Street Journal writer Eric Danton.
This is the first time Grupo Fantasma decided to outsource someone to produce their album as opposed to self-producing. Steve Berlin, from multi-Grammy winning rock band Los Lobos, was commissioned for the project. Bassist Greg González explains, “We thought a new process would help us to find a unique voice and create a story. It would’ve been easier and cheaper to record everything ourselves and reuse the same techniques..but the desire was to push ourselves in new directions.”
The band is also celebrating their 15th anniversary together and their new album (from Blue Corn Music) release at the Mohawk in Austin on Oct. 30th.
